The Grignard reaction is a fundamental organic reaction that forms new carbon-carbon bonds by adding an organomagnesium halide to a carbonyl group (aldehyde, ketone, or ester). So too were bonds formed in the lives of two unknowing individuals when Carolina asked Micah what his favorite organic chemistry reaction was over an online dating app. The answer was, of course, the Grignard reaction, as this was the only reaction Micah was able to consistently score points on during his time taking OChem.
From then on, a shared love of science, food, games, and learning drove their relationship forward organically. The relationship path they took was certainly not a standard one, though. At the beginning of their journey together, Micah had just transitioned to his position as Lead Scientist at the UH Sequencing and Gene Editing Core while in the middle of his PhD, and Carolina was heavily embedded in the medical school admissions process. Time and money were currencies neither of them had much of. Through Micah’s determination and Carolina’s ever-present understanding of a 24/7 lab schedule, their relationship continued.
A major turning point came when Carolina was accepted to medical school with an incredible scholarship opportunity… at UT Southwestern in Dallas. Micah’s PhD program was more than a year out from completion, with no guarantee of a potential move for him, but both chose to continue pursuing each other while making advances toward their life goals in separate cities. Weekly, from Friday to Sunday, Micah made the trip from Houston to Dallas by bus to visit Carolina. Delays, rain, heat, mechanical issues, ride cancellations—all of these were common on the ride over. However, being able to see each other at the end of the week was worth the time it took. Even when they were too busy to text or call during the week, even when their separate lives took 110% of their time and energy, meeting for a portion of the week kept them from drifting apart in the torrent of their own life paths.
Toward the end of Micah’s PhD, an opportunity opened at a company making products he had worked with extensively during his time at the UH Core. Not only that, but this position utilized the exact skill set he had built over the past five years of his life while running a Core and living the start-up life. By God’s grace, the position at this worldwide company happened to be based in… Dallas! As his program wrapped up, Micah had his work set out for him: first, finish the PhD; second, interview for and secure the position in Dallas. With Carolina’s support and God’s providence, both happened.
For the first time in their relationship, both Carolina and Micah were in the same city… living in the same apartment. This transition brought about its own set of challenges, but through everything, they both were committed to learning more about each other: how to live with each other, how to love and care for each other, and how to support each other as they continued pursuing their own personal goals.
It is with great pleasure that they now invite their friends and family to share in their wedding day with them—those who were there throughout the time they spent both together and apart.

Cada semana, de viernes a domingo, Micah viajaba de Houston a Dallas en autobús para visitar a Carolina. Retrasos, lluvia, calor, fallas mecánicas, cancelaciones de viaje: todo eso era común en el trayecto. Sin embargo, poder verse al final de la semana valía todo el tiempo invertido. Incluso cuando estaban demasiado ocupados para textear o llamar durante la semana, incluso cuando sus vidas por separado les exigían el 110% de su tiempo y energía, encontrarse durante una parte de la semana evitó que se alejaran en el torrente de sus propios caminos.
Hacia el final del doctorado de Micah, surgió una oportunidad en una empresa que fabricaba productos con los que él había trabajado extensamente durante su tiempo en el UH Core. No solo eso: el puesto aprovechaba exactamente el conjunto de habilidades que había desarrollado durante los últimos cinco años de su vida, dirigiendo un Core y viviendo la experiencia de una start-up. Por la gracia de Dios, el puesto en esta empresa global resultó estar en… ¡Dallas! Mientras su programa llegaba a su fin, Micah tenía una misión clara: primero, terminar el doctorado; segundo, entrevistar y asegurar el puesto en Dallas. Con el apoyo de Carolina y la providencia de Dios, ambas cosas se lograron.
Por primera vez en su relación, Carolina y Micah estaban en la misma ciudad… viviendo en el mismo apartamento. Esta transición trajo consigo sus propios desafíos, pero, a través de todo, ambos mantuvieron el compromiso de conocerse cada vez más: cómo vivir juntos, cómo amarse y cuidarse mutuamente, y cómo apoyarse mientras continuaban persiguiendo sus metas personales.
